Text Box: Darryn Eggleton

Darryn Eggleton was born in South Africa in 1981. He developed an early passion for both art and the natural world; one of his earliest memories is of sketching in the Kalahari on a family holiday there.

His first job on leaving school was Artist in Residence at the exclusive Leopard Creek Golf Club in the Kruger National Park. There he spent long hours alone in the wilderness absorbing the surroundings and studying the animals. It was this experience that led him to embark on a career as an artist, specialising in African wildlife. Drawing inspiration from nature, and always being intrigued at the small, intricate details within each animal. He enjoys the challenge of creating these details with a paintbrush, often spending hours on a small section, trying to get the pattern and texture perfected.

These are the driving forces behind his paintings and he is always striving with each new work of art to gain perfection of the chosen animal. Making use of a cinematic cropping of the animals, his goal is for the subject to appear to project further than the plane of the canvas, creating a presence, and placing the viewer somewhere in the physical experience of the painting.

His animal paintings, with their contemporary edge, caught the public imagination and his work is in collections in the USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. He has been short-listed for David Shepherd's Wildlife Artist of the Year award at the Mall Galleries in 2009.
