Text Box: Mary Anne Imhof

The sensual appeal of the raw colour.

Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. In La Gomera mineral pigments are present in such abundance that my current actually focuses on colo
ur itself. In a way, I act as a gold digger during my excursions on the island colour rock and earth.

Then, in long hours of contemplative work I rub the raw material in the studio with a glass mortar on a glass plate into a fine powder paint. The pigments obtained can then be used for a variety of painting techniques. I work myself mainly with acrylic.

« The fine
ly grinded pigments of the volcanic island of La Gomera have a strong sensuality » says Mary Anne Imhof. « They make me think at powder boxes one would find in a boudoir or at spices reminding me of an oriental market. They even have a distinguishable smell. This sensorial experience of colour is so much more than the physical act of just seeing the pigments. This colour perception research leads me into physical, mental and spiritual experiences. Here begins the great adventure of colour. »
